Summary notes
The key points of every note, for a last read before a test.
Integration: powers, 1/x and (ax + b)โฟ
- Integration reverses differentiation; add \(+c\).
- \(x^{n}\to\frac{x^{n+1}}{n+1}\) (n โ โ1); \(\frac1x\to\ln x\).
- \((ax+b)^{n}\to\frac{(ax+b)^{n+1}}{a(n+1)}\); \(\frac{1}{ax+b}\to\frac1a\ln(ax+b)\).
- Rewrite roots, fractions and brackets as powers before integrating.
Integrating exponentials and trig
- \(e^{ax+b}\to\frac1ae^{ax+b}\).
- \(\cos\to\sin\), \(\sin\to-\cos\), \(\sec^{2}\to\tan\); divide by a; radians.
- \(\tan^{2}=\sec^{2}-1\), \(\sin x\cos x=\tfrac12\sin2x\).
Definite integrals and unknown limits
- \(\int_a^b f\,dx=F(b)-F(a)\), no + c.
- Exact: keep logs, surds, e and ฯ; combine logs with the log laws.
- Unknown limit: integrate, substitute, set equal, solve, reject impossible roots.
Differentiate, then integrate ('hence')
- \(\frac{d}{dx}F=g\Rightarrow\int g\,dx=F+c\).
- Multiple: divide by the number.
- Extra terms: integrate the whole derivative, move the easy integral across.
Finding a curve from its gradient
- Integrate dy/dx with + c; the point gives c.
- dยฒy/dxยฒ: integrate twice; gradient โ cโ, point โ cโ.
- Normal gradient m: the curve's gradient is \(-1/m\).
Areas under curves
- Area under a curve \(=\int_a^b y\,dx\).
- Below the axis: the integral is negative; use its size.
- Crossing the axis or changing boundary: split and add.
Areas between lines and curves
- Area between graphs \(=\int(\text{top}-\text{bottom})dx\) between the meeting points.
- A straight boundary can be a triangle or trapezium instead.
- Tangent/normal regions: build the line, then curve area ยฑ triangle.
What the syllabus says you need to know
- Understand integration as the reverse process of differentiation
- Integrate sums of terms in powers of x, including 1/x and 1/(ax + b)
- Integrate (ax + b)^n for any rational n, sin(ax + b), cos(ax + b), secยฒ(ax + b) and e^(ax + b)
- Evaluate definite integrals and apply integration to plane areas: between a line and a curve, between two curves, a sum of two areas
