Syllabus 1.4, 1.6 and 1.14: decimals
  • 1.6Add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals without a calculator.
  • 1.4Convert between terminating decimals and fractions.
  • 1.14Use a calculator well (brackets, powers, roots) and round to the accuracy asked.

Before you start: order of operations. Rounding: the Significant Figures chapter.

Formula bank

Add / subtractLearn itline up the decimal pointsfill gaps with zeros: 12.50 − 3.78.Use it when + or − with decimals.
MultiplyLearn itmultiply as whole numbers; answer has as many decimal places as both numbers together\(0.3\times0.02\): 3 × 2 = 6, 3 d.p. → 0.006.Use it when × with decimals.
DivideLearn itmake the divisor whole: × both numbers by 10, 100, …\(7.2\div0.06=720\div6\).Use it when ÷ by a decimal.
Decimal → fractionLearn itover 10, 100, 1000, then simplify\(0.45=\tfrac{45}{100}=\tfrac9{20}\).Use it when "write as a fraction".
Calculator fractionsLearn itbrackets round the whole top and the whole bottom(6.5 + 2.3) ÷ (4.1 − 1.7).Use it when typing a fraction.

Adding and subtracting

General methodHow to add or subtract decimals

  1. Write the numbers with the decimal points in a column.
  2. Fill empty places with zeros (12.5 → 12.50).
  3. Add or subtract as normal; the point drops straight down.

Example Work out 12.5 − 3.78.

Line up the points; write 12.5 as 12.50.

  1. 12.50 − 3.78

Multiplying decimals

General methodHow to multiply any decimals

  1. Estimate first (2.4 × 3.6 ≈ 2 × 4 = 8).
  2. Ignore the points and multiply the whole numbers.
  3. Count the decimal places in BOTH numbers together; give the answer that many places.

Why: \(0.3\times0.02=\tfrac3{10}\times\tfrac2{100}=\tfrac6{1000}\) - the denominators multiply, so the decimal places add.

Example Work out \(2.4\times3.6\).

24 × 36, then 2 decimal places.

  1. \(24\times36=864\)
  2. 2 d.p.

Dividing by a decimal

General methodHow to divide by any decimal

  1. Multiply BOTH numbers by 10, 100 or 1000 until the divisor is a whole number.
  2. Divide as normal.
  3. Check: dividing by a number less than 1 makes the answer bigger.

It works because \(\dfrac ab=\dfrac{10a}{10b}\): an equivalent fraction.

Example Work out \(7.2\div0.06\).

× both by 100.

  1. \(720\div6=120\)

Decimals and fractions

General methodHow to convert

  1. Decimal → fraction: write it over 10, 100 or 1000 (one zero per decimal place), then simplify.
  2. Fraction → decimal: top ÷ bottom.
FractionDecimalFractionDecimal
\(\tfrac12\)0.5\(\tfrac18\)0.125
\(\tfrac14\)0.25\(\tfrac38\)0.375
\(\tfrac15\)0.2\(\tfrac1{20}\)0.05
\(\tfrac34\)0.75\(\tfrac1{25}\)0.04

Answer \(\tfrac9{20}\)

2

Answer 0.375

Using the calculator well

General methodHow to type any calculation correctly

  1. Brackets round the whole top and the whole bottom of a fraction.
  2. A root of a sum: close the root's bracket after the whole sum: \(\sqrt{12.6+2.3^{2}}\).
  3. Write down the full display (or 4-5 figures) before rounding.
  4. Round to what the question asks (2 d.p., 3 s.f.); if nothing is said, 3 s.f.

Example Work out \(\dfrac{6.5+2.3}{4.1-1.7}\) to 2 d.p.

Brackets round top and bottom.

  1. \((6.5+2.3)\div(4.1-1.7)=3.6666\ldots\)

Answer 3.67

Ways they test it

Type 1 Non-calculator × and ÷

"Work out (a) \(0.07\times0.4\) (b) \(900\div0.03\)." (1 mark each)

Spot it small decimals, no calculator.

  1. ×: whole numbers, then count places.
  2. ÷: make the divisor whole.

For example \(900\div0.03\)

  1. \(90\,000\div3\)

Answer 30 000

Type 2 Long multiplication

"Without a calculator, work out \(4.6\times2.35\). Show your working." (2 marks)

Spot it "show your working".

  1. Grid or column: 46 × 235.
  2. Place the point (3 d.p.).

For example \(4.6\times2.35\)

  1. \(46\times235=10\,810\)

Answer 10.81

Type 3 Calculator with brackets

"Calculate \(\dfrac{7.3^{2}-4.1}{2.5+\sqrt{1.96}}\) to 2 d.p."

Spot it a fraction, powers or roots.

  1. Brackets round top and bottom.
  2. Full display, then round.

Type 4 Money

"Ali buys 2.4 kg of bananas at $0.85/kg and 3 loaves at $1.35. Change from $20?" (3 marks)

Spot it prices and amounts.

  1. Each cost.
  2. Total.
  3. Subtract.

For example bananas and bread

  1. \(0.85\times2.4=2.04\)
  2. \(3\times1.35=4.05\)
  3. \(20-6.09\)

Answer $13.91

Mistakes to avoid

  • ✗ 0.3 × 0.02 = 0.06✓ 0.006Three decimal places in total.
  • ✗ 1.2² = 1.4✓ 1.44Squaring means × itself.
  • ✗ 600 ÷ 0.2 = 120✓ 3000Dividing by less than 1 makes it bigger.
  • ✗ 6.5 + 2.3 ÷ 4.1 − 1.7 typed without brackets✓ brackets round top and bottomThe calculator follows BIDMAS.

Summary

  • + −: line up the points.
  • ×: multiply whole numbers, then decimal places add.
  • ÷: make the divisor whole by × both numbers.
  • Calculator: brackets round tops and bottoms; round at the end.

If you see …

  • ÷ by a decimal× both by 10, 100 …
  • "show your working" with ×grid or column, then place the point.
  • a fraction on the calculatorbrackets.
