Drawing a histogram
In a histogram the bars touch, the horizontal axis is a continuous scale, and the vertical axis is frequency density. The AREA of a bar shows the frequency, so a wide class doesn't look unfairly big.
| Height h (cm) | Frequency | Class width | Frequency density |
|---|---|---|---|
| \(0<h\le10\) | 8 | 10 | 0.8 |
| \(10<h\le15\) | 12 | 5 | 2.4 |
| \(15<h\le20\) | 15 | 5 | 3 |
| \(20<h\le30\) | 10 | 10 | 1 |
| \(30<h\le50\) | 6 | 20 | 0.3 |
General methodHow to draw any histogram
- Work out each class width (upper − lower).
- Frequency density = frequency ÷ class width; add a column.
- Label the vertical axis 'Frequency density' and choose a scale.
- Draw each bar from its lower to its upper bound, as tall as its frequency density. No gaps.
Check with areas: the first bar is 10 wide and 0.8 tall, area 8 = its frequency. If all classes have the same width, the histogram looks just like a bar chart with no gaps.

Reading a histogram
General methodHow to read frequencies from a histogram
- Read the bar's height (frequency density) on the scale.
- Frequency = height × class width.
- For part of a class, use only the part of the width you need.
Example Estimate how many heights are between 12 cm and 25 cm.
Parts of three bars: 12-15 (3 of 5 cm), all of 15-20, 20-25 (5 of 10 cm).
- \(2.4\times3=7.2\)
- \(3\times5=15\)
- \(1\times5=5\)
- \(7.2+15+5=27.2\)

Ways they test it
Type 1 Draw
"Draw a histogram to show the information." (3 marks)
Spot it a grouped table with unequal widths.
- Frequency density column.
- Bars to scale.
Type 2 Complete the table from the histogram
"Complete the frequency table." (2 marks)
Spot it some bars drawn, some frequencies missing.
- Height × width.
For example bar 30-50, height 0.3
- \(0.3\times20\)
Answer 6
Type 3 Find the scale
"There are 8 values in the first class. Label the vertical scale." (2 marks)
Spot it no numbers on the vertical axis.
- Frequency density = 8 ÷ width.
- That fixes the scale.
Type 4 Part of a class
"Estimate the number of heights between 12 and 25 cm." (3 marks)
Spot it bounds inside classes.
- Fraction of each class.
- Add.
Mistakes to avoid
- ✗ Bar height = frequency✓ height = frequency densityOnly for equal widths does this not matter.
- ✗ Gaps between bars✓ bars touchThe scale is continuous.
- ✗ Reading the height as the frequency✓ height × width
- ✗ Vertical axis labelled 'Frequency'✓ 'Frequency density'It costs a mark.
Summary
- Frequency density = frequency ÷ class width = bar height.
- Area of a bar = frequency.
- Part of a class: fraction of its width × its frequency.
If you see …
- unequal class widthsfrequency density.
- 'how many' from a histogramheight × width.
