At a glance

Exact roots: simplifying, calculating with surds, and rationalising denominators.

  1. Simplifying surds
  2. Adding, multiplying and expanding
  3. Rationalising the denominator

1Simplifying surds

  • A surd is a root that is irrational, like โˆš2 or โˆš12. It is exact โ€” keep it as a surd unless told to round.
  • Find the largest square factor: โˆš72 = โˆš(36 ร— 2) = 6โˆš2.
  • Square factors to look for: 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100.

Formulas

โˆš(ab) = โˆša ร— โˆšb
โˆš(a/b) = โˆša / โˆšb
โˆša ร— โˆša = a

Worked example

Simplify โˆš75 + โˆš12.

  1. โˆš75 = โˆš25 ร— โˆš3 = 5โˆš3.
  2. โˆš12 = โˆš4 ร— โˆš3 = 2โˆš3.
  3. 5โˆš3 + 2โˆš3.

7โˆš3

2Adding, multiplying and expanding

  • Only like surds add or subtract: 6โˆš2 โˆ’ 4โˆš2 = 2โˆš2, but โˆš2 + โˆš3 cannot be combined.
  • Multiply: โˆš3 ร— โˆš12 = โˆš36 = 6; 2โˆš5 ร— 3โˆš2 = 6โˆš10.
  • Expand brackets just as in algebra, then simplify each term.
  • (a + โˆšb)(a โˆ’ โˆšb) = a2 โˆ’ b: the surds cancel. This is used to rationalise.

Worked example

Expand and simplify (3 + โˆš2)2.

  1. (3 + โˆš2)(3 + โˆš2) = 9 + 3โˆš2 + 3โˆš2 + 2.
  2. Collect: 11 + 6โˆš2.

11 + 6โˆš2

Exam tip: (a + โˆšb)2 is NOT a2 + b โ€” there is a middle term 2aโˆšb.

3Rationalising the denominator

  • 'Rationalise' means: no surd on the bottom of the fraction.
  • a/โˆšb: multiply top and bottom by โˆšb. 10/โˆš5 = 10โˆš5/5 = 2โˆš5.
  • a/(b + โˆšc): multiply top and bottom by (b โˆ’ โˆšc). a/(b โˆ’ โˆšc): multiply by (b + โˆšc).

How to do it

  1. Look at the bottom.
  2. Single surd โˆšb โ†’ multiply top and bottom by โˆšb.
  3. b ยฑ โˆšc โ†’ multiply top and bottom by the same with the opposite sign.
  4. Expand and simplify; cancel any common factor.

Worked example

Rationalise 6/(3 โˆ’ โˆš3).

  1. Multiply by (3 + โˆš3)/(3 + โˆš3).
  2. Bottom: 9 โˆ’ 3 = 6.
  3. Top: 6(3 + โˆš3).
  4. 6(3 + โˆš3)/6.

3 + โˆš3

โœ—Common mistakes

Donโ€™t writeWrite instead
โˆš9 + โˆš16 = โˆš25 โˆš9 + โˆš16 = 3 + 4 = 7
Leaving โˆš72 as 2โˆš18 Use the largest square factor: 6โˆš2
(3 + โˆš2)2 = 9 + 2 Middle term: 9 + 6โˆš2 + 2 = 11 + 6โˆš2
Multiplying only the top when rationalising Multiply top and bottom by the same surd

โ˜…In the exam

  • 'Give your answer in the form a + bโˆšc' โ€” make sure a, b, c are integers and the surd is simplified.
  • Surd questions are on the non-calculator paper; check by squaring your answer mentally.
  • Exact answers (like in Pythagoras) are often wanted as simplified surds.
