Surds
Simplifying surds, adding, multiplying and expanding them, and rationalising denominators.
How to use this
Read each "I canโฆ" statement and rate yourself honestly. Then try its quick check. If you get a check wrong on something you rated Got it, we'll suggest moving it to Shaky. My progress compares your ratings with your past-paper results to find topics you think you know but keep losing marks on.

Surds on one sheet
For the night before. The full notes teach the topic; this is just what you must remember.
At a glance
Exact roots: simplifying, calculating with surds, and rationalising denominators.
1Simplifying surds
- A surd is a root that is irrational, like โ2 or โ12. It is exact โ keep it as a surd unless told to round.
- Find the largest square factor: โ72 = โ(36 ร 2) = 6โ2.
- Square factors to look for: 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100.
Formulas
Worked example
Simplify โ75 + โ12.
- โ75 = โ25 ร โ3 = 5โ3.
- โ12 = โ4 ร โ3 = 2โ3.
- 5โ3 + 2โ3.
7โ3
2Adding, multiplying and expanding
- Only like surds add or subtract: 6โ2 โ 4โ2 = 2โ2, but โ2 + โ3 cannot be combined.
- Multiply: โ3 ร โ12 = โ36 = 6; 2โ5 ร 3โ2 = 6โ10.
- Expand brackets just as in algebra, then simplify each term.
- (a + โb)(a โ โb) = a2 โ b: the surds cancel. This is used to rationalise.
Worked example
Expand and simplify (3 + โ2)2.
- (3 + โ2)(3 + โ2) = 9 + 3โ2 + 3โ2 + 2.
- Collect: 11 + 6โ2.
11 + 6โ2
Exam tip: (a + โb)2 is NOT a2 + b โ there is a middle term 2aโb.
3Rationalising the denominator
- 'Rationalise' means: no surd on the bottom of the fraction.
- a/โb: multiply top and bottom by โb. 10/โ5 = 10โ5/5 = 2โ5.
- a/(b + โc): multiply top and bottom by (b โ โc). a/(b โ โc): multiply by (b + โc).
How to do it
- Look at the bottom.
- Single surd โb โ multiply top and bottom by โb.
- b ยฑ โc โ multiply top and bottom by the same with the opposite sign.
- Expand and simplify; cancel any common factor.
Worked example
Rationalise 6/(3 โ โ3).
- Multiply by (3 + โ3)/(3 + โ3).
- Bottom: 9 โ 3 = 6.
- Top: 6(3 + โ3).
- 6(3 + โ3)/6.
3 + โ3
โCommon mistakes
| Donโt write | Write instead |
|---|---|
| โ9 + โ16 = โ25 | โ9 + โ16 = 3 + 4 = 7 |
| Leaving โ72 as 2โ18 | Use the largest square factor: 6โ2 |
| (3 + โ2)2 = 9 + 2 | Middle term: 9 + 6โ2 + 2 = 11 + 6โ2 |
| Multiplying only the top when rationalising | Multiply top and bottom by the same surd |
โ In the exam
- 'Give your answer in the form a + bโc' โ make sure a, b, c are integers and the surd is simplified.
- Surd questions are on the non-calculator paper; check by squaring your answer mentally.
- Exact answers (like in Pythagoras) are often wanted as simplified surds.
